INGATESTONE

THE STAR

GRAYS

An old village pub which is in the High Street opposite the old market place of what has become an overgrown village surrounded by new development. No market held within living memory. Small car park at rear but probably easier to park in official car park behind market place which is free in the evenings.

Inside a mixture of old beams and recesses combined with the odd piece of veneered plywood. Vast ancient fireplace with cradle grate and chimney to match, in which in winter there is a real fire on which huge branches are burned. Not a log fire at all. Beer excellent. Food - crisps are sold. No stage but live music on some nights. Monday is usually ‘folk’ music in a rather broad sense - anything from West Indian or Irish to local, and anybody who can play can join in. Other nights there are small local bands.

A bit dull at lunchtimes but excellent beer, pleasant staff and a generally relaxed atmosphere. Pool table in separate room; parrot. Lavatories off passage to rear door, part of a not so ancient extension to the premises, are adequate.
